Music Workshop with disabled children

Picture an image of a child stricken with disabilities. How does it make you feel?

Sadness? Helplessness? Hopelessness?

It is estimated that there are 55,000 children and youths with all forms of disabilities studying in 5,000 public special and mixed schools in our nation, Malaysia.

Globally, according to United Nations, it is estimated that there are 93 million of such children and youths.

These children and youths share common challenges, inequalities and social barriers which result in many psychological and emotional challenges. At such young age, these children are already exposed to an extremely negative environment. As they grow up to adulthood, they face similar inequalities economically, thus, resulting in them being perceived and treated as burdens to societies as well as their families.

For the past 5 years, our team has been engaged in many learning and enabling projects to hopefully make a difference to their lives. One of our learning projects which was launched in 2017 was to provide sponsored tuition to 200 disabled students (visually and hearing impaired) from 11 special schools nationwide. This platform was in collaboration with our country’s largest public listed education publisher, where materials were accessible for the students' usage anytime and anywhere through the power of technology and the Internet.

We have seen some breakthroughs in terms of academic results when 7 of our blind students scored an average of 3 to 8 As in the 2017 Secondary 5 examination - SPM (equivalent to Year 11 Cambridge IGCSE). This enabled them to gain further higher education opportunities such as enrolling for pre-university programmes (i.e A-Levels) and even degree programmes.

We intend to expand on this learning project to include those stricken with mental and multiple disabilities by engaging them in dance and music workshops using an accessible technology called Soundbeam. We believe dance and music is a universal barrier-free learning and experience which will hopefully aid children and youths regardless of abilities, race or religion.

Dance and music often invokes joyful expressions. It is also an excellent bridging tool in fostering inclusion among diversities and encouraging empathy. So hopefully, it will help open up a different world for these children and youths and make lives better for each and everyone of these precious individuals.

We are seeking to start a social enterprise selling our own brand of ‘people caring’ gourmet coffee blend that will enable us to sustain our work to reach out to all of these children in our country. And hopefully in the future, we will be able to bring this project to the rest of the world.

We collaborated with established coffee suppliers from Malaysia who has been around for the past 15 years.
