Project Summary
Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death globally. While early detection of heart disease can help prevent stroke or fatalities, many do not go for testing until it is too late due to inconvenience, high costs, shortage of cardiologists and congestion at hospitals. Patients typically use a Holter or loop recorder to record ECG data, then transfer their data at the hospital and queue for another appointment days later to see a cardiologist. Holter and loop are heavy, bulky and expensive, costing several thousand ringgit per unit. If a device is easily available to test heart rhythm, many can get early detection of problems without having to queue at the hospitals.
Our product, Mini Heartcatcher, is a portable device that can support up to 3 electrodes for ECG data recording and can transmit these ECG recordings wirelessly to a smartphone and cloud storage. A mobile app on the phone records and displays the ECG data to the user. Mini Heartcatcher can record prolonged data just like a Holter, as well as short recordings whenever patients felt a cardiac event.
Our team needs additional fundings to improve on the existing prototype. Most importantly, we need financial support for the development of a web portal with computerised assessment of heart rhythm where users with abnormal rhythms can be alerted to see a cardiologist. Cardiologist can access patient's data to check on patient's rhythm without having the patient to queue or wait out at the hospital, eliminating congestion and unnecessary hospital appointments.
If we get a minimum funding of RM5000, we will donate the first unit of mini Heartcatcher to a selected old folks home in Malaysia.
